Rainy day brunch!

Rainy Sunday home brunch — hot rice plate with eggs, vegetables and protein. Monsoon weather and kitchen warmth in tandem.

Rainy day brunch!

Sunday rainy day brunch at home with BB — monsoon weather meant zero motivation to leave the apartment. The kitchen became the comfort zone again.

Today’s plate:

The rainy-day home brunch is a particular kind of cooking experience. The kitchen window gets steamed up from the rice cooker and the simmering pots, the rain drums against the windowpanes outside, and the overall ambient temperature in the apartment ticks up two degrees from the cumulative cooking heat — which feels exactly right when the weather has gone cool from the downpour.

Hot rice was the base. Properly steamed jasmine, fluffy and slightly sticky, the kind of rice that pairs with anything you put on top.

Fried egg was the M-style sunny-side standard. Crispy white edges, runny golden yolk that breaks over the rice in a slow glossy stream when you spoon it.

Stir-fried vegetables today were a mix of bok choy and cabbage shreds with garlic and a splash of soy. Crunchy stems, just-wilted leaves, light salt. The colour break against the beige rice and egg.

Protein was pan-seared chicken thigh. Skin-on, salt-and-pepper seasoning, hit the skillet skin-side first for the crispy render, flipped to cook through. Finished with a squeeze of lime and chopped fresh herbs.

Chilli sauce on the side as always.

We ate at the kitchen table, the rain outside slowing to a drizzle. Sunday brunch during the rainy season had become one of the small reliable joys of the lockdown period — no commitments, no plans, just a hot plate of food and BB across the table.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Quiet rainy day brunch — keeping the routine.
