Lorong Ah Soo lor mee with braised egg and fishcake, chwee kueh with chai poh, and soya bean drinks. $4 big bowl / $3.50 small + $1.50 + $2.10.
A classic hawker breakfast-into-lunch run with BB: Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee, chwee kueh and soya bean drinks. ๐
What was on the tray:
- A big bowl of Lorong Ah Soo lor mee ($4) in the orange bowl: dark thick gravy with halved braised eggs (stained dark by the soya marinade), fried fishcake, bits of meat and chopped scallions
- A small bowl of lor mee ($3.50): same thing, smaller portion
- A spoon of dark sambal chilli and minced garlic on the rim, the lor mee essential
- A plate of chwee kueh ($1.50 each): soft steamed rice cakes topped with preserved radish (chai poh) in chilli
- Three glasses of soya bean ($2.10): two plain, one with bubble tea pearls
Lorong Ah Sooโs lor mee leans on the heavy, dark-gravy style with a good five-spice depth. The braised egg is the standout, stained right through with the marinade so even the yolk takes on that savoury colour. Stir in the garlic and sambal chilli on the rim and the thick gravy comes alive.
The chwee kueh on the side is the smart hawker move, small bites that do not compete with the noodles for stomach space, and the chai poh topping is the best bit, sweet, salty and funky all at once. A cold soya bean rounds it off and cuts through the heavy gravy.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Dark, five-spice-rich Lorong Ah Soo lor mee with lovely braised eggs, generous chai poh chwee kueh and a soya bean chaser. A heritage hawker meal.
