Katong Laksa ($5)!
Bugis hawker Katong laksa bowl: thick coconut curry broth with bee hoon, prawns, bean sprouts, sambal, and chopped laksa leaves. $5.
Lunch at a Bugis hawker. Katong laksa, $5. πππΌ
What was in the bowl:
- Thick orange coconut curry broth: the signature Katong-style red-orange colour with chilli oil sheen on top
- Bee hoon (rice vermicelli) cut short: the trademark Katong move, eaten with a spoon only
- Prawns: 2 visible, pink and cooked
- Bean sprouts: scattered through the bowl, the textural crunch
- Chopped laksa leaves (daun kesum): piled on top in a generous mound, the herbal note that distinguishes laksa from generic curry
- Sambal dollop in the centre: extra spice to mix in to taste
- Fish cake slice: just visible at the edge
Katong laksa is the Singapore Peranakan signature dish that takes its name from the East Coast Katong neighbourhood where the style developed. The defining moves:
- Bee hoon cut into short pieces: 2-3 inch lengths so you can eat with a spoon, no chopsticks needed
- Spoon-only eating: the rule, not the suggestion
- Coconut curry broth: rich, sweet from coconut, layered with dried shrimp and rempah spice paste
- Sambal added separately: pre-portioned, customer-adjusted heat
- Laksa leaves on top: chopped fine, the mint-coriander cousin herb thatβs the secret weapon
The Katong laksa tradition splits into two famous houses:
- 328 Katong Laksa: the most-Googled, won the vs Gordon Ramsay showdown in 2013 (Gordon couldnβt beat the auntie)
- Janggut Laksa: the longer-running Katong family with multiple branches under the family name
- Various Marine Parade and Joo Chiat hawker versions: the unsung heroes
At $5 at a Bugis hawker, this is the budget pricing for the dish. Genuine Katong-area stalls run $5.50-$7. Mall outlets push $7-$10. Restaurant versions go higher with bigger prawns and add-ons.
The Bugis version delivered the format faithfully:
- Short bee hoon: correctly cut
- Sambal blob in centre: standard placement
- Laksa leaves on top: generous portion
- Coconut broth heat: medium-mild without the sambal mixed in
Overall: 4.1 / 5. πππΌ Solid budget Katong laksa. Not the Joo Chiat top-tier, but hit the craving. Would re-order for the price.
