Mixed Veg Porridge ($5)!
Bugis cafeteria mixed veg porridge with fried tofu, fish cake, kang kong greens, bean sprouts, and plain congee. $5.
Lunch at the Bugis cafeteria. Mixed veg porridge, $5. πππΌ
What was on the tray:
- Plain rice congee: thin pourable consistency, with the visible dark soy drizzle that turns half the bowl brown
- Fried tofu cubes: golden squares of tau pok (or firm fried tofu), drizzled with the same dark sauce
- Fish cake slices: pan-grilled, soft pinkish interior, light brown edges
- Stir-fried kang kong with bean sprouts and wood ear mushroom: the leafy green pick + crunch additions
- Side of plain bean sprouts: extra serve of the crunch component
- The 3-pick + congee + soy drizzle build
This was a similar 3-pick + congee setup as the previous porridge stall, with slightly different picks. The protein leaned tofu + fish cake rather than chicken or pork, making this lunch lighter overall.
The dark soy drizzle across the congee is the Cantonese tradition that some Singapore hawkers preserve. It adds:
- Visual contrast: the half-brown half-white pour pattern is signature
- Salty backbone: the plain congee gets its flavour lift from the soy
- Aromatic finish: a touch of sesame oil sometimes added at the end
The fish cake slice as a cai png pick is the budget protein choice:
- Cheaper than meat dishes: usually 80 cents to $1 a slice
- Mild flavour: doesnβt fight other picks
- Pan-grilled with brown edges: dry heat preserves the texture better than deep-frying
- Kid-friendly: smooth, soft, no bones
The kang kong with bean sprouts + wood ear mushroom is a textural-variety vegetable dish. The kang kong leaves soften and absorb sauce. The bean sprouts stay crunchy. The wood ear mushroom adds that slippery-chewy contrast Chinese cuisine loves.
At $5 for 3 picks + congee, this is slightly above the budget tier from the previous porridge run ($4.10). The 80-cent gap usually comes from picking a featured meat dish or doubling a pick portion. Here it was probably the extra bean sprouts side.
Overall: 4.1 / 5. πππΌ Light lunch porridge, the kind of meal that lets you keep moving in the afternoon. Would re-order.
