Chicken schnitzel at Outram Park ($10.90)!

Lunch — chicken schnitzel at the Outram Park Western hawker for $10.90. Crispy panko schnitzel done right. 😋

What was on the plate ($10.90):

Schnitzel = the Austrian-German pounded breaded cutlet, traditionally with veal (Wienerschnitzel) but most non-Austrian variants use chicken or pork. The two markers: pounded thin + panko or breadcrumb-coated.

The schnitzel here passed both tests — visibly pounded flat (thinner than a standard chicken cutlet) + proper panko coating (crispy + golden + not too thick). Pounding the chicken tenderises + flattens for fast even cooking, the breading gives the textural shell.

Two fillets at $10.90 = the value proposition. Most SG hawker Western stalls give one large cutlet, this stall gives two smaller pounded pieces — same protein, more crispy surface area per gram.

The tomato marinara dip is the Austrian-Italian touch — most SG stalls give either ketchup or brown gravy with schnitzel, the marinara is closer to the European-traditional pairing. Bright + tangy + cuts through the richness.

Shoestring fries are the standard Western-hawker side — thin-cut, salty, slightly crispy. Mesclun salad + lemon wedge are the bright counterbalance to the fried mains.

At $10.90 = the cheap-and-good tier of hawker Western. Cheaper than the $14.90 barramundi I had at the same area earlier.

Total: $10.90.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. Schnitzel was properly pounded + panko-crispy, two pieces for the price was the bonus, marinara dip was the European touch. Will reorder. 😋👍🏼
