Macadamia butterscotch is the classic gelato combination that pairs the sweet caramelised butterscotch base with crunchy roasted macadamia nuts. The butterscotch provides the deep sugar-and-butter caramelisation flavour; the macadamia adds the buttery-rich nut crunch.
The butterscotch base was the headline. Made from butter, brown sugar, and cream slow-cooked until the sugar caramelises into the proper amber-brown butterscotch sauce, then folded into the gelato base. The flavour profile is rich and sweet with the slight toffee depth that distinguishes butterscotch from regular caramel.
Macadamia nuts are the upgrade ingredient. The world’s most expensive commodity nut (per kilo), with the dense buttery-rich profile and the satisfying crunch. Properly roasted macadamia has the slight golden colour and the toasted-nut aroma; raw macadamia stays pale and lacks the depth.
The combination eats as the rich-sweet-crunchy combination. Each spoonful brings butterscotch sweetness with the textural pop from the nut pieces scattered through. The macadamia balances the butterscotch sweetness with its slightly savoury-buttery profile.
At $2.50 for a single scoop this is honest neighbourhood gelato pricing. The premium artisan gelato spots charge $4-6 per scoop; the chain spots charge $3-4; the neighbourhood spots run $2-3 depending on location.
Macadamia butterscotch isn’t a flavour I’d order from every gelato spot. The combination requires both ingredients to be properly executed — the butterscotch has to have the proper caramelisation depth, the macadamia has to be properly roasted and present in adequate quantity. Bad versions skimp on the macadamia or use synthetic butterscotch flavouring.
This stall’s version had the right ratio. Generous macadamia pieces distributed throughout, with the butterscotch base properly amber-coloured and properly sweetened.
Mid-week gelato pickups are the small rituals that break up the work week. Wednesday afternoon, after-work hawker dinner, weekend afternoons — the gelato spot rotation gives us the dessert breaks across the week.
