This little hawker stall, the sign just says ่ฑ่ฑๆฐด / SOYA BEAN DRINK, is one of those no-frills places that does one thing and does it well. There were a few uncles at the counter when we got there, hands up ordering, which is half the fun of the photo and a good sign of a stall that people come back to.
The soya bean itself is the whole point: fresh-pressed, smooth and clean-tasting, with that lovely milky, gently sweet soya flavour and none of the chalky raw-bean note you get from a bad one. We had it cold over ice, which is exactly how you want it in the Singapore heat, refreshing and comforting at the same time.
Soya bean drink is one of those humble, timeless Singapore beverages, cheap, nutritious and endlessly satisfying. Finding a stall that still presses it fresh is a small joy, and this one is a keeper.
