A fun cafe visit with BB to Mellower Coffee, the Shanghai-born specialty coffee chain, to try their signature Onde Onde Latte, with an iced coffee on the side. ☕😋
What we had:
- Onde Onde Latte: a pandan-and-coconut espresso latte, served with a shot of espresso to pour in and a coconut-rimmed glass
- An iced coffee
The Onde Onde Latte is Mellower’s playful local twist, inspired by the onde onde kueh. It arrives on a little wooden tray: a tall glass of pandan-tinted milk, jade-green and fragrant, rimmed with grated coconut, plus a separate shot of espresso you pour in yourself. As you tip the coffee in, it streaks through the green milk and you get that lovely pandan-coconut sweetness underneath the coffee, a sort of onde onde in a glass. Theatrical and delicious, very much made for a photo.
The iced coffee alongside was the more straightforward order, smooth and well-pulled over ice, a good clean counterpoint to the sweeter, fragrant latte.
It is more of an experience drink than an everyday kopi, but that is exactly the point of a Mellower visit. The pandan and coconut really do taste of the kueh, which made it a fun, memorable cup.
