萝卜糕 + 煎蛋 (NT$65)!
Wednesday Taiwan — radish cake + fried egg NT$65. Taiwan breakfast classic.
Taiwan trip breakfast: 萝卜糕 (radish cake) + 煎蛋 (fried egg) at NT$65 (~SGD$3). 😋
On the plate: pan-fried radish cake slices and a fried egg, all sitting in a glossy, savoury-sweet brown sauce.
萝卜糕 (luo bo gao, radish cake) is made from grated white radish (daikon) and rice flour, steamed into a soft cake, then sliced and pan-fried so the edges turn golden and slightly crisp while the inside stays soft and almost custardy. It’s the same family as the carrot cake we get back home, but the Taiwan breakfast-shop version is served whole-slice rather than diced, often with that sweet soy gravy ladled over.
The fried egg on top is the perfect partner: break the runny yolk and let it run into the radish cake and sauce, adding richness to every bite. The savoury-sweet gravy ties it together, soaking into the soft cake. Simple, comforting, and exactly the kind of warm, cheap breakfast you’d grab at a Taiwanese morning eatery before a day of exploring.
At NT$65 (around SGD$3), it’s wallet-friendly local breakfast at its best.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Crisp-edged radish cake, a runny fried egg and a moreish sweet-savoury gravy. A comforting Taiwan breakfast. Would re-visit.
