The McDonald’s $1 cone has rotated through multiple flavours across the year. Vanilla is the permanent default; limited-edition flavours come and go every few months — pandan in January, popcorn caramel in February, and the rotation continues through the year.
The popcorn caramel flavour is the indulgent variant. Caramel-flavoured soft-serve with popcorn-flavoured swirls, sometimes with actual popcorn pieces incorporated as the textural component. The combination references the movie-theatre popcorn-and-soda format that defines American indulgence eating.
The caramel sweetness is the headline. Deep amber-tinted soft-serve with the rich caramelised-sugar flavour profile, balanced against the slight savoury-buttery notes that the popcorn flavour adds. Different from the standard vanilla cone, which is one-dimensional sweet; the popcorn caramel has the caramel-and-popcorn complexity.
The colour is pale-amber rather than the standard white. The visual difference is subtle but noticeable when compared side-by-side against the standard vanilla.
The eating ritual is fast. The cone arrives still slightly chilled from the machine, with the soft-serve starting to melt the moment it’s exposed to Singapore weather. You eat fast, working through the top swirl before the melt starts running down the cone.
At $1 each this is the cheapest possible dessert in Singapore that’s still recognisable as proper soft-serve. The McDonald’s pricing on the cone has stayed at $1 for years despite inflation creeping into everything else.
Limited-edition flavours drop and disappear within a few weeks of the promo cycle, so we hit the McDonald’s drive-thru roughly weekly during each flavour’s run.
The twin pickup is the standard approach for the limited-edition drops. One cone for the immediate eating, one for the next-day craving. Or sometimes one each for BB and me on the same visit.
After the pandan and now popcorn caramel, the McDonald’s $1 cone rotation has earned a permanent slot in our 2019 weekly routine.
