We ordered (Burpple Beyond high tea set):

The tiered stand arrived with the standard three-level architecture:
- Bottom tier: savoury sandwiches and finger foods (cucumber sandwiches, smoked salmon, ham-and-cheese, mini quiches)
- Middle tier: warm scones with clotted cream and jam (plain + raisin)
- Top tier: sweet pastries (macarons, fruit tarts, mini cakes, eclairs)
The savoury bottom tier was the substantial portion. Sandwiches small but neatly cut, crusts removed, fillings generous. Smoked salmon on rye was the highlight — properly cured fish, fresh dill, lemon zest.
Scones were the centrepiece. Warm from the oven, slightly crumbly, with the signature buttery softness inside. Clotted cream and jam on the side completed the British high-tea experience — split the scone in half, layer cream, layer jam, eat in two bites. The clotted cream was the proper Devon-style — thick, creamy, slightly nutty.
Sweet pastries on top tier were the small variety. A couple of macarons in pastel colours, a fruit tart with seasonal berries, a chocolate-leaning mini cake, an eclair with cream filling. Each one a different small dessert.
Tea selection was the loose-leaf range — Earl Grey, English Breakfast, jasmine green, oolong, chamomile. Refilled freely during the sitting.
$22.50 for the high tea via Burpple Beyond is excellent value. Full price would have been close to $50. The subscription discount made the format accessible without requiring a special occasion.
The high tea ritual is the small lockdown-discovery format. We hadn’t done high tea pre-pandemic; circuit breaker brought the format into our awareness through the Burpple Beyond menu, and we’d kept it as the occasional Sunday treat into phase 2.
Slow eating, multiple cups of tea, no rush. The kind of meal that anchors a Sunday afternoon.
