Omusoba for TGIF lunch ($23.70)!

TGIF lockdown lunch — omusoba (omelette wrapped over yakisoba) delivery for $23.70. Japanese fusion comfort lunch.

Omusoba for TGIF lunch ($23.70)!

Friday TGIF lunch — pulled the omusoba delivery for $23.70. The Japanese fusion dish that pairs yakisoba noodles with an omelette wrapper, plus the obligatory takoyaki-style toppings.

We ordered:

Omusoba is one of those Japanese fusion creations that probably started as an izakaya improvisation and ended up on chain menus across Asia. The dish layers two iconic Japanese street foods: yakisoba (stir-fried noodles) wrapped or topped with an omelette in the same style as omurice (omelette wrapped over rice).

The yakisoba base is the substance. Thick alkaline noodles wok-fried with finely sliced cabbage, carrot strips, sliced pork, and the signature yakisoba sauce — a sweet-savoury blend of Worcestershire, oyster, ketchup and soy. The result is dark glossy noodles with proper wok-toasted aroma.

The omelette wrapper is the visual hit. Thin egg crepe folded over the top of the noodles, slightly underdone in the centre so it stays soft and silky against the firm noodles underneath. Cut open at the table (or in our case, at the kitchen counter) the omelette slowly slumps to reveal the noodles inside.

Toppings on top of the omelette: a generous drizzle of okonomi sauce (the same sweet-savoury sauce used on okonomiyaki), Japanese mayonnaise lines, bonito flakes that wave when they hit the heat coming off the dish, and a sprinkle of aonori (green seaweed flakes).

The textures and flavours combine the silky soft omelette, the chewy stir-fried noodles, the rich sauce-and-mayo glaze, and the salty-umami bonito-aonori finish.

$23.70 for the omusoba delivery on a TGIF lockdown is fair Japanese-restaurant pricing.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Strong TGIF lockdown omusoba — would re-order.
