Tamoya’s claim to fame remains the sanuki-style chew. Thick, square-cut, hand-cut udon made fresh on-site daily. By December we’d been visiting Tamoya regularly through the year via various Burpple Beyond promos. The 30%-off year-end promo was the slight bump up from the standard set discounts.
The sanuki beef egg udon was the substantial bowl. Thick, square-cut, hand-cut sanuki udon noodles in a clear dashi broth. The beef topping was thin slices in a sweet-soy glaze (gyudon-style), tender, with the beef juices running into the dashi as you mix. A whole soft egg yolk sat on top — break it, stir, and the whole bowl thickens into the silky noodle bowl that’s Tamoya’s signature.
The dashi broth was the Tamoya standard — clear, faintly amber, with kombu-bonito-mirin depth.
Tempura prawn add-on was the side. A single piece of properly battered prawn tempura, deep-fried to that golden translucent crisp. The tempura sauce (tentsuyu — soy-mirin-dashi mix with grated daikon) came in a small bowl on the side for dipping.
At $20.37 via the Burpple Beyond 30% promo this is fair Tamoya pricing. Full price would’ve been closer to $29 for the same combination — udon at $19, tempura prawn at $4-5, plus tax/service. The 30% discount brings the meal into the accessible weekend lunch tier.
The pattern of Tamoya + Burpple Beyond had been steady through the year. We’d visited probably 6-8 times across 2020 via various Burpple Beyond promos and sets, each time taking advantage of the subscription discount to access the premium sanuki udon at the casual weekday lunch pricing.
