Tea break ($13.40)!

Saturday afternoon tea break with BB — $13.40 cafe stop. The small post-lunch sweet stop at the budget-tier cafe pricing.

We ordered (tea break):

Total: $13.40 for the spread.

The $13.40 tea break sits at the budget-to-mid cafe tier — about $6-7 per person. Designed to be a between-meals snack with proper sitting space rather than a full meal.

The sweet item was the centre of the order. Probably a cake slice, a small tart, or a pastry depending on what the cafe was featuring on the day. The kind of small dessert that’s substantial enough to satisfy but light enough that it doesn’t compete with dinner.

Drinks were the standard cafe pours. A specialty coffee for me, a tea for BB. Both in proper ceramic cups.

The tea-break format had been a regular through the year. Lockdown-era discovery, phase-2 staple. Sitting at a small table for 30 minutes with a cake and a drink became the small Saturday afternoon ritual.

The pattern across the weekend rotation had its rhythm. Saturday brunch at home, Saturday lunch out (occasionally) or at the hawker centre, Saturday tea break at a cafe, Saturday dinner depending on the day. Sunday similar but with a brunch-out frequency that’s higher than Saturday.

Phase 2 reopening had restored access to the small-cafe ecosystem, and the budget tea-break was one of the small weekly luxuries that we’d built into the routine.

The cafe was the usual neighbourhood spot. By late November we’d been frequenting the same few cafes long enough that the baristas knew our orders and we knew the menu well enough to order without looking.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Reliable tea break — would repeat weekly.
