Rainy Monday's lunch (medium: $6.50)!
Rainy Monday lunch — medium-sized hawker takeaway $6.50. Hot wok lunch during the monsoon weather.
Rainy Monday lunch — medium-sized hawker takeaway at $6.50. The hot wok lunch during the monsoon weather.
We ordered:
- Hawker plate (medium size) — $6.50
The medium size at hawker stalls is the upgrade tier above the standard $4-5 plate. Roughly 40-50% more volume than the regular plate, designed for hungry diners or for sharing. At $6.50 the medium covers the appetite for both lunch and a small post-lunch satiety.
The plate could’ve been any of the hawker noodles or rice options that scale to a medium size — hokkien mee, char kway teow, fried rice, or one of the noodle-soup formats. The exact stall didn’t matter much; at the medium size most stalls upgrade their portions consistently.
The rainy day adds the small pleasure of eating hot wok food while the weather outside is grey and cool. Hot hawker plates and rainy weather are one of the better Singapore food combinations.
We took the takeaway home rather than eating at the hawker centre. The kitchen counter became the eating venue, with the rain drumming on the windows providing the weather backdrop.
The medium size at $6.50 is in the slightly elevated hawker range — about 30% more expensive than the standard plate, with the volume upgrade justifying the price. Some stalls offer the size upgrade selectively (only on dishes where the portion can be meaningfully scaled); others do it across the menu.
Phase 2 had restored access to the hawker takeaway and dine-in options, and rainy days had a clear preference toward takeaway-and-home rather than dine-in. The kitchen counter is the better eating venue for rainy days — drier, cosier, and you don’t have to walk back home in the wet.
The Monday weekday lunch routine through November had its pattern. Home cooking as the steady baseline, occasional hawker takeaway breaks (like today’s rainy lunch), restaurant breaks for variety. The medium-sized hawker takeaway was today’s variation.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid rainy Monday hawker lunch — would repeat in the rain.
