A Japanese set dinner with BB at a casual Bugis diner: a curry tori katsudon set with all the trimmings, $14.90+. ๐
What was on the table ($14.90+):
- Curry tori katsudon: a panko chicken cutlet sliced over rice, half-covered in Japanese brown curry with soft potato and carrot, topped with scrambled egg and pink pickled ginger
- Chawanmushi: silky steamed egg custard with a dashi-soya drizzle
- Mushroom tempura with a dipping sauce and grated daikon
- Miso soup with tofu and wakame
- A honey lemon drink
These little Japanese-diner sets are great everyday value, a complete meal in one tray: a carb main, a fried side, an egg dish, a soup and a drink. The katsudon was the star, a crisp panko chicken cutlet staying crunchy under a ladle of mild, sweet Japanese curry thick with soft potato and carrot, all over rice. Comfort food squared.
The chawanmushi was the lovely soft counterpoint, a silky savoury egg custard you spoon through, and the mushroom tempura held its crunch nicely in the light batter. A bowl of warming miso soup and a cold, tangy honey lemon rounded it out, the citrus cutting through the fried-and-curry richness.
A complete, comforting Japanese set at the right price, around $17 after tax.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Crisp katsu under rich curry, silky chawanmushi and crunchy mushroom tempura, a complete Japanese set. Would re-order.
