A plate of dry yong tau foo from 隆发酿豆腐 Long Fa Yong Tau Foo, $7.40. 🥢😋

What we had ($7.40):

隆发酿豆腐 is a stall in the market and food centre at Blk 630 Bedok Reservoir Road, one of those older east-side hawker centres tucked under the HDB blocks where the market and the cooked food sit side by side. It is a neighbourhood spot rather than a destination, the sort of place you end up at because you live nearby or you are passing through Bedok Reservoir.

Yong tau foo is a meal where you build your own plate, and the ordering is half the fun: you point at what you want off the tray and it comes back blanched, with soup on the side and the sauce poured over.

This one came dry and was very generous with the sauce, a thick, dark, glossy sweet sauce spooned over everything until it pooled at the bottom of the plate. It is the sweet-savoury kind that coats rather than runs, so every piece picks some up.

Underneath was a good spread. Chunky wedges of fried tau kwa, golden and firm, sat next to puffy tau pok stuffed with fish paste, a fish ball, folds of crisp-edged beancurd skin (tau kee) and a whole shiitake mushroom, its cap soft and meaty. Rounding it out were slices of black fungus, florets of broccoli, bok choy and cabbage, so the plate is not all fried things.

The clear soup came separately with a few leaves floating in it, light and clean, exactly what you want alongside all that sauce. A sip between bites resets your mouth.

At $7.40 for a plate this size it is a filling, vegetable-heavy lunch, and the sauce is the part that makes it. Sweet-sauce yong tau foo is not for everyone, but if that is your thing this does it well.

Overall: 4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Generous sauce, good mix of pieces, and a clean soup on the side. Would order again.
