Pork katsu omu rice ($9.90) @ Omu Place, Hong Lim!

A comforting plate of pork katsu omu rice from Omu Place at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre, $9.90. ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ˜‹

What we had ($9.90):

Omu Place is a newish Japanese hawker stall (#02-27) at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre in Chinatown, a concept from the team behind 2 Chefs Too Many. It opened in June 2026 and does affordable Japanese omu rice and udon right in the CBD, a fun change from the usual hawker fare a short walk from Chinatown MRT. There are five kinds of omu rice on the menu, from the Original at $5.90 up to a Wagyu Hamburg version, plus a cold truffle goma udon that gets a lot of love, gyoza, takoyaki and daifuku for dessert.

This pork katsu version comes plated the tornado way: a dome of soft, thin egg ribbons swirled into a spiral over buttered rice, the whole thing napped in a glossy brown demi-glace and finished with a sprinkle of dried parsley.

The omelette was the fun part, a soft, custardy swirl that you break into so it melts down over the rice, the egg rich and just-set rather than firm. The demi-glace poured over it was the savoury-sweet Japanese brown sauce, deep and glossy, tying the egg and rice together.

Alongside sat the pork katsu, a panko-crumbed cutlet fried golden and craggy, then sliced into strips so it is easy to eat. The crumb stayed crisp at the edges while soaking up a little of the sauce, the pork tender inside. Cut a piece, scoop up some saucy egg and rice, and you get that comforting katsu-plus-omelette mouthful.

For $9.90 in the CBD it is a satisfying, good-value plate, hearty and homely even if it does not quite reach the fancier omurice places. A solid one for a Chinatown lunch, and I would come back to try the truffle udon and the wagyu hamburg omu rice next.

Overall: 3.5 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Soft tornado omelette, crispy pork katsu and a glossy demi-glace over buttered rice, good value in the CBD. Would come back for the other omu rice.
