What we had ($7.90):
- Truffle egg fried rice with shrimps, $7.90
Fried Rice Story is the halal-certified hawker chain that took the Din Tai Fung approach to egg fried rice and ran with it, the kind where every grain is coated and separate. They have a few outlets now (Bukit Merah, Sengkang, Bedok Reservoir) and a menu of variations: plain egg, teriyaki, mala, and this truffle one, with add-on toppings like crab and scallop.
The rice was pressed into a tidy mound and crowned with half a dozen plump, sweet poached shrimps. Underneath, the egg fried rice was pale gold and glossy, each grain wok-tossed with egg so it stayed loose rather than clumping. The truffle oil is the twist here, an earthy, savoury aroma that hits before the first bite and runs through the whole bowl without drowning out the egg.
It is a clever, comforting plate. The truffle gives a simple dish a more grown-up, almost decadent edge, and the prawns on top add freshness and a bit of protein heft. If anything I would have liked the wok hei a touch stronger, but the rice itself was well-fried and the truffle was generous.
At $7.90 for truffle fried rice plus prawns, it is fair value for what is essentially a hawker take on a restaurant dish.
Overall: 4.0 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Fragrant truffle oil, fluffy egg fried rice and sweet plump prawns. Would re-order.
