- A side of stir-fried beansprouts
- A bowl of soup and a few cucumber slices
Boon Heng Atas started as a chicken rice and roast meat stall in Peopleβs Park Food Centre and has since opened a handful of neighbourhood outlets. The set pairs two of their crowd favourites on one plate, so you get the best of both the steamed-style chicken and the barbecued pork.
The chicken was the tender, juicy sort, sliced thick and moist, draped with a dark savoury sauce that pooled into the rice. The char siew was the star though, lacquered and glistening with those slightly charred, caramelised edges that give it a smoky-sweet bite against the leaner chicken. The rice underneath had soaked up the meat juices and sauce, so even a plain spoonful tasted of the whole plate.
On the side, a small plate of beansprouts tossed in dark sauce added crunch and freshness, the cucumber slices kept it cooling, and the light soup rounded the meal out. For $5.50 you get two roast meats, a vegetable and soup, which is solid value for a roast meat rice set these days.
Overall: 4.1 / 5. πππΌ Juicy chicken, smoky caramelised char siew and tasty rice, a good-value two-meat plate. Would re-order.
