Taiwanese braised pork rice ($6.10)!

A takeaway bowl of Taiwanese braised pork rice (lu rou fan) for $6.10, the comfort-food fix. ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ˜‹

What we had ($6.10):

This is the Taiwanese classic, diced pork belly slow-braised in soy until the fat goes soft and jammy, then ladled over rice with all that dark, glossy sauce. The pieces were a mix of lean and fatty, sticky with the braising liquid, exactly the savoury-sweet, slightly five-spiced flavour you want.

A halved braised egg (lu dan) sat to the side, the white stained tea-brown from the same braise and the yolk just set. A few stalks of blanched bok choy added a clean, green break from the richness. Underneath, the rice had soaked up enough of the sauce to taste of the pork on its own.

It travels well too, the whole thing still hot and saucy out of the takeaway bowl. At $6.10 it is a tidy, filling portion of one of my favourite comfort bowls.

Overall: 4.1 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Soft, savoury-sweet braised pork belly, a tea-stained egg and sauce-soaked rice. Would re-order.
