Mixed vegetables rice ($4.30)!
A $4.30 cai png (economic rice) plate from a Kaki Bukit stall: braised tau pok, scrambled egg with long beans and three kinds of greens over mixed rice.
A simple, satisfying mixed vegetables rice (cai png) lunch for $4.30, packed into a paper box from a stall around Kaki Bukit. ๐๐
What we had ($4.30):
- A scoop each of white and brown rice
- Braised tau pok (fried beancurd puffs) in dark gravy
- Scrambled egg with long beans
- Stir-fried bok choy
- Sautรฉed leafy greens with egg and garlic
- Curry cabbage with carrot
This is the everyday economic rice plate, the kind you build by pointing at the tray and watching it all get piled over rice. I went mostly vegetables this time, so it came out as a colourful, mostly-green box with the tau pok as the one richer item.
The braised tau pok was the highlight, soaked through with the sweet-savoury dark gravy until each puff was heavy and dripping. The scrambled egg with long beans added a soft, eggy bite, while the two plates of greens kept it light, one clean and garlicky, the other glossier. The curry cabbage with its bit of carrot brought a gentle spiced warmth to round it off, and a mix of white and brown rice underneath made it feel a touch more wholesome.
Nothing fancy, just a balanced, vegetable-heavy plate that hits the spot on a weekday and barely dents the wallet at $4.30.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Gravy-soaked tau pok and a good spread of greens, honest cai png value. Would re-order.
