TuanTuanYuanYuan is a small dessert stall at #02-036 in Chinatown Complex, Blk 335 Smith Street, up on the second floor with the rest of the food centre. It is run by a husband-and-wife team who make their desserts fresh rather than opening tins, so the cheng tng and the yuzu are both done in house.
The yuzu came as a cup of shaved ice flooded with a pale gold honey yuzu syrup, with shreds of candied yuzu peel through it. That peel is the reason to order this one: it carries a faint bitterness that stops the whole thing turning into plain sugar water.
Floating in it were pink pomelo sacs, which pop and release juice, translucent cubes of aloe vera, and soft rounds of jelly. Between the three you get a bit of chew in every spoonful instead of just slush.
It melts fast, which is the fate of every shaved ice in Singapore weather, and honestly it drinks just as well once it does. Cold, citrusy and not too sweet, which is exactly what you want after a hawker centre lunch.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Refreshing, sharp with real citrus, and $3.50 well spent. Next time I want to try their traditional cheng tng.
