JB getaway cafe — fish & chips + mushroom aglio olio + latte (RM$48.60)!
Johor Bahru cafe — twin panko fish fillets with fries, salad, mushroom cream + tomato sauces, side mushroom aglio olio, latte with art. RM$48.60 (~SGD $14).
JB getaway with BB on 22/04/2026 — cafe stop for fish & chips + mushroom aglio olio + latte at RM$48.60 (~SGD $14). 😋
What was on the table (RM$48.60):
- Fish & chips (front round black plate) — two long panko-fried fish fillets topped with herbs, shoestring fries underneath, garden salad (lettuce, shredded cabbage, cherry tomatoes), a small saucer of creamy mushroom sauce, another of tomato sauce.
- Mushroom aglio olio (back, smaller round plate) — spaghetti tossed in garlic-oil with mushroom slices, garnished with a pink edible flower for presentation.
- Latte in a white mug with proper rosetta latte art — micro-foam pulled correctly.
JB cafe scene has been levelling up the past few years — the SG-side day trip now includes cafe-hopping as a regular agenda. Same espresso-machine + panko-frying tier as SG cafes, but at 30-40% lower prices (RM$48 = SGD$14 for what would be SGD$25-30 in SG).
Fish & chips at SG cafes runs $18-25 for one fillet + fries. JB version: RM$30-ish for TWO fillets + fries + salad + two sauces. Same panko-fried fish technique (looks like dory or barramundi fillet), same shoestring fries, same garden salad. Quality matches the price gap.
The creamy mushroom sauce is the JB-cafe-Western standard side — most JB cafes do mushroom sauce + tomato sauce + black pepper sauce as the standard fish/chicken dippers. The mushroom one is the most popular.
Mushroom aglio olio at the size shown = the starter / small portion = RM$15-ish. Spaghetti with sliced button mushrooms tossed in garlic-olive-oil. Edible flower is the cafe-styling touch.
Latte with rosetta art = proper espresso bar standard. Most JB cafes invest in barista training to compete with SG, so latte art is consistent.
The 22/04/2026 timestamp in the caption = the actual visit date (posted 7 days later, hence the 29/04 timestamp on the IG post). JB getaways usually involve a few cafes + a few meals + budget shopping.
At RM$48.60 (~SGD$14) for two people = ridiculous value compared to SG.
Total: RM$48.60.
Overall: 4 / 5. Fish & chips were the right portion for the price, aglio olio was a decent side, latte art was textbook. JB cafe day-trip pricing makes it the smart move. 😋👍🏼
