Outram Park Western fish & chips ($11.90)!

Lunch — fish & chips at an Outram Park Western hawker for $11.90. The reliable hawker-Western pick. 😋

What was on the plate ($11.90):

The Outram Park hawker Western stalls are my go-to area for affordable Western — I keep coming back here for the fish & chips ($11.90), schnitzel ($10.90 earlier), barramundi ($14.90 earlier). Same stall ecosystem doing pan-seared fish + battered fish + chicken cutlets at $10-15 each.

Standard hawker fish & chips fillet = either dory or sutchi catfish typically (the white firm fish that’s most affordable). The orange-golden batter colour here = probably paprika-tinted batter (some stalls add paprika to the flour mix for the colour + light spice). Thicker than the proper UK beer batter but typical of SG hawker-Western.

Shoestring fries (vs the proper UK chunky chips) = the SG hawker default. Cheap to bulk-buy + fast to fry. Less satisfying than chunky chips but acceptable at $11.90.

Garden salad with mesclun + tomatoes + cucumber wedge = the lighter side. Adds the fresh-acidic counter to the fried fish.

Tartare sauce with black pepper specks = the home-made-tasting version (mayo + chopped capers/pickles + black pepper). Better than the bottled tartare some stalls use.

At $11.90 = standard hawker-Western pricing for fish & chips in 2025. I keep paying this for the same dish across multiple visits — comfortable familiar value.

Total: $11.90.

Overall: 4.2 / 5. Fish batter was crispy + decent thickness, fries were the standard shoestring, tartare had proper pepper-flecked depth. Outram Park Western reliable. 😋👍🏼
