Nasi goreng, Ayam masak merah, Curry vegetables, Sambal boiled egg ($5)!

Wednesday circuit breaker lunch — Malay set delivered for $5. The four-component plate is generous for the price and the Malay flavours rotate beautifully across the box.

We ordered:

Total: $5 (combo deal).

Nasi goreng is the Malay-style fried rice — wok-fried rice with sambal belacan paste, garlic, shallot, fish sauce and dark soy. The rice gets that distinctive red-orange tint from the chilli paste and a sweet-spicy depth from the belacan. Punchier than Chinese fried rice, with more salt and more chilli heat.

Ayam masak merah (“red-cooked chicken”) was the curry-leaning chicken dish. Bone-in chicken pieces braised in a tomato-based chilli sauce with lemongrass, ginger, galangal and turmeric. Sweet-spicy-savoury, with a thick gravy that clings to the meat. Different from a yellow curry — drier, more tomato-driven, with the chilli pop closer to the front.

Signature curry vegetables — long beans, carrot, cabbage and potato simmered in a yellow turmeric coconut curry. Mildly spiced, soft-cooked vegetables, with a sauce that you spoon over the rice. The lockdown delivery equivalent of vegetable side dish.

Sambal boiled egg is the bonus — hard-boiled egg halved, with a spoonful of pasted sambal on top. The chilli heat hits hard but the egg yolk balances it.

Eat by spooning each component over the rice and rotating bites. The flavour spectrum across all four spans sweet, spicy, savoury, fresh.

$5 for this much Malay food during lockdown was a steal.

Overall: 4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid lockdown Malay set — would absolutely re-order.
