Pork ribs prawn noodles ($5 each)!
NYE lunch at a Kallang hawker — pork ribs prawn mee bowls with deep prawn broth and tender ribs, $5 each.
First lunch of 2020 — BB and I started the year at a Kallang hawker stall for a proper bowl of pork ribs prawn noodles.
We ordered:
- Pork ribs prawn noodles (dry) — $5
- Pork ribs prawn noodles (soup) — $5
The broth had that long-boil, head-shell-laden depth you only get from a stall that bothers to make it from scratch — not too salty, with just enough sweetness from the prawn heads. Pork ribs were stewed soft enough to fall off the bone, and the prawns were de-shelled which I always appreciate when slurping noodles. Dry version came with crispy pork lard, a little chilli, and a small bowl of the same broth on the side.
Kallang area in the morning has that quiet weekday-feeling even on a public holiday, and the hawker was just busy enough that you knew the food was solid without a queue that ate up your appetite. At $5 a bowl this is the kind of casual, no-frills meal that reminds me why I keep coming back to neighbourhood hawkers instead of mall food.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 A grounded, comforting NYE lunch — would come back when we’re in the area again.
