Tiger Sugar is the Taichung-origin brown sugar boba chain that defined the global tiger-stripe boba milk drink format. The brand started in 2017 in Taichung and exploded across Asia in 2018-19, with the Singapore outlets opening in 2019 with hours-long queues. We caught the Taipei outlet during the Taiwan trip — same brand, original-country pricing, no Singapore queue overhead.
The drink is the format-defining version. Fresh milk poured over brown-sugar-coated tapioca pearls, with the dark sugar streaming down the inside of the cup in those iconic tiger-stripe patterns. No tea base in the classic version — just milk, pearls, and brown sugar.
The pearls are the headline. Tiger Sugar’s brand differentiator is the boba quality — properly cooked tapioca pearls with the chewy QQ texture, soaked in brown sugar syrup that’s deeper and more caramelised than the chain competitors. Each pearl has that proper bouncy bite when you chew through, with the brown sugar coating providing the intense caramel-molasses sweetness.
The “tiger stripes” are the result of the proper brown sugar coating sticking to the inside of the cup as you pour the milk in. The visual presentation is the social media moment that made the drink go viral globally — the dark sugar against the white milk creates the tiger-stripe pattern that photographs beautifully.
The eating ritual is the bite-the-pearls. Fat straw into the cup, suck up the pearls in batches with the milk, chew through them. Eat slow because the experience is half the drink — the visual presentation is fleeting once you start drinking.
NT$50 (~SGD $2.25) at the Taipei source. The Singapore outlet charges $5-6 for the same drink with queue overhead.
The Taipei original visit makes the global hype make sense — proper format at proper source pricing.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Excellent Tiger Sugar at source — would re-order any Taipei trip.
