Yong tau foo lunch bowl ($6.70)!
YTF lunch — dark dressed noodle bowl loaded with kailan, fried tau pok, fried beancurd, sesame; side soup with sweet corn; fried YTF items + beancurd ball. $6.70.
WFH lunch — yong tau foo dressed-noodle bowl style at $6.70. The dry version with all the sides. 😋
What was on the table ($6.70):
- A large black bowl of YTF noodle base dressed in dark sweet sauce — yellow mee + bee hoon mixed together, topped with stir-fried kailan greens (or choy sum), fried tau pok, fried fishcake strips, fried shallots, chopped scallions and white sesame seeds.
- A side bowl of clear YTF soup with sweet corn kernels and chopped scallions floating.
- A small dish of fried YTF items — beancurd balls, a piece of stuffed beancurd ball (round), and a couple of fried meatballs.
- A small dish of bright red chilli sauce on the side for dipping the YTF items.
The dressed-noodle version of YTF is the underrated alternative to the soup version — you get the same fried items + greens but with the noodles dressed in sweet soya sauce rather than swimming in broth. Different mouthfeel, more lo-mein style.
Sweet corn in the side soup is the unusual touch — most YTF stalls give plain broth + scallions, this one added sweet corn kernels for a touch of sweetness that balanced the savoury main bowl.
Fried beancurd balls are the textural treats — golden crispy outside, soft minced fish + beancurd inside. Dip in the red chilli for extra punch.
Total: $6.70. Premium hawker YTF pricing.
Overall: 4.2 / 5. Dressed-noodle version was a nice change from the soup, sweet corn side soup was the unusual touch, fried balls were the dippable highlight. Will reorder. 😍👍🏼
