The chocolate pie is the dessert-leaning variant. Deep-fried pie crust filled with hot chocolate-ganache or chocolate-custard filling. Different from the apple pie which uses cooked apple chunks in cinnamon-sugar syrup; the chocolate pie uses smooth chocolate filling that flows molten when you bite through.
The crust was the test. Proper McDonald’s pie crust has the crispy-shattering deep-fried exterior with the slight buttery flavour. The pie format is small — about the size of a folded business envelope — and the crust takes up about a third of the volume, with the filling occupying the rest.
The chocolate filling was the headline. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate base (the formulation varies by region), with the slight viscous flow when the pie is hot. Eating the pie within minutes of receiving it preserves the molten filling experience; waiting too long lets the chocolate cool and set into a firm fudge texture.
The eating ritual is fast. The pie arrives still piping hot from the deep fry, with the warning sticker on the bag about the filling temperature being dangerous. You hold by the paper wrapper, bite through one corner, sip out the steam, then eat the rest fast before the temperature drops below ideal.
