Sometimes you just want something simple and warm, and this hit it. Five plump wontons bobbing in a clear, savoury broth with a few stalks of greens and a scatter of spring onion, hot and soothing.
The dumplings were the prawn-and-pork kind, the filling pink-tinged through the thin skins, smooth and well seasoned with a bit of sesame oil and pepper. The skins had that lovely soft, slippery edge that gathers in little ruffles, the part you slurp. The broth underneath was clean and light, the sort simmered long enough to taste of something rather than just hot water.
It is not trying to be much, and that is exactly the appeal. You could pair it with a plate of dry noodles from another stall, or just have it on its own as a light bite. For $3, honest, gentle comfort.
