Fried fish dumpling hor fun ($3)!

A comforting hawker lunch for just $3, fried fish dumpling hor fun in a dark, savoury gravy. ๐Ÿ˜‹

What we had:

This is the wet, saucy style of hor fun, and the gravy is the whole point. Smooth, dark and savoury, lightly thickened so it clings to the slippery hor fun (flat rice noodles), with soft slices of shiitake mushroom and a few stalks of greens through it for freshness.

The fried fish dumplings are what make this bowl. Fish paste wrapped in a thin skin, boiled then deep-fried so the outside turns golden and crispy while the inside stays soft and bouncy. Sitting in the gravy they soften just slightly at the edges while keeping their crunch, that lovely crispy-soft contrast against the saucy noodles. A couple of cut chilli padi on top add a sharp little kick.

For three dollars this is a genuinely satisfying, full-flavoured bowl, the kind of cheap hawker find that is getting rarer. Comforting and generous.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Silky hor fun in dark gravy with crispy fried fish dumplings, satisfying for $3. Would re-order.
