Laksa 酿豆腐 ($4 each)!
A hawker bowl of yong tau foo cooked in laksa broth: beancurd skin and tau pok soaking up a rich coconut-curry gravy. $4 each.
A flavourful, wallet-friendly hawker lunch with BB: laksa 酿豆腐 (laksa yong tau foo), $4 each. 😋
What we had ($8 for two):
- Two bowls of yong tau foo in laksa broth, with lots of beancurd skin and tau pok
This is the clever hawker mash-up of two favourites: pick your yong tau foo items, but instead of the usual clear soup, have them cooked in a rich laksa broth. The result is so much more exciting than plain YTF.
The broth was a proper orange laksa gravy, creamy with coconut milk and built on a rempah of chilli, lemongrass, galangal and dried shrimp, so it comes out fragrant and gently spicy. The toppings were chosen to drink it all up: the sheets of beancurd skin turn silky and soak up the curry in their folds, while the tau pok act like little sponges, each one bursting with broth when you bite in.
It eats richer and more satisfying than a clear-soup YTF, somewhere between a laksa and a build-your-own bowl. And at $4 a bowl, it is unbeatable value for something this fragrant and comforting.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Beancurd skin and tau pok drinking up a rich, fragrant laksa gravy, great value at $4. Would re-order.
