NY Night Market dinner ($48.15)!

Sunday dinner with BB at NY Night Market$48.15 spread. The Singapore Taiwanese-style night market chain dinner with beers and small plates.

We ordered (NY Night Market spread):

Total: $48.15 for the spread.

NY Night Market is the Singapore Taiwanese chain that replicates the Taipei night market food format in a sit-down restaurant setting. The menu spans the iconic Taiwanese night market dishes — popcorn chicken (xiang xiang ji), stinky tofu, oyster mee sua, da chang bao xiao chang, three-cup chicken, beef noodles, plus a substantial beer-and-cocktail program.

The spread probably included a rotation of the night market favourites:

The Taiwanese night market food format works in the Singapore sit-down context because the dishes are individually substantial and the format encourages multiple-dish sharing. The Taipei night market version is the walking-around eating format; the Singapore chain version is the sit-down-and-order-multiple-dishes format.

The Taiwan beer was probably the drinks pairing. Light lager profile, easy-drinking, the proper pairing with the salty-savoury Taiwanese night market food. Some spots also serve Taiwanese cocktails (e.g., Kavalan whisky highballs) for the upscale option.

The popcorn chicken in particular travels well from the Taipei original to the Singapore replication. Sweet potato flour batter, fresh basil leaves crisped in the residual fry oil, five-spice salt seasoning. The Singapore chain’s version is recognisable as the same dish from the Taipei night markets, with the small adjustments for the sit-down restaurant format.

At $48.15 for the spread of multiple dishes plus beers, this is fair Singapore Taiwanese-chain restaurant pricing. The home cooking alternative wouldn’t capture the multi-dish night market feel; the restaurant format provides the experience that’s hard to replicate.

The Sunday dinner format works for the relaxed pacing. We sat across multiple courses, drank multiple beers, took our time across the evening.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid NY Night Market dinner — would re-order.
