鸳鸯水饺面 ($4)!
A dry bowl of egg noodles in chilli sauce topped with both fried and boiled dumplings, with leafy greens. $4.
A tasty hawker lunch: 鸳鸯水饺面 (mixed dumpling noodles) at $4. 😋
What I had:
- Dry egg noodles tossed in chilli sauce, topped with fried dumplings, boiled dumplings and a bit of leafy greens
The 鸳鸯 (“mandarin duck”, meaning a pair) here refers to getting two kinds of dumplings in one bowl, which is the whole fun of it. You get crisp fried dumplings, all shattering, golden skin, plus plump boiled dumplings with soft, slippery wrappers and a juicy pork-and-prawn filling. Two textures, one bowl.
The noodles were served dry, the springy thin egg-noodle kind tossed in a savoury, slightly spicy chilli sauce so every strand is glossy and full of flavour. A few stalks of crunchy greens balance out the richness.
The clever part is alternating: a bite of crunchy fried dumpling, a bite of soft boiled one, a twirl of the saucy noodles. It keeps the whole bowl interesting right to the end, and there is usually a bowl of clear soup on the side to wash it down.
At $4 for noodles plus four dumplings, it is generous, comforting hawker value.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Springy chilli noodles with both crispy and soft dumplings, fun and satisfying. Would re-order.
