A comforting, wallet-friendly hawker lunch: 滑蛋河 (wat tan hor), $3.50. 😋
What I had:
- Wat tan hor: wide flat rice noodles under a silky egg gravy, with pork, prawn, fishcake and greens
This is the saucy, “moonlight” style of hor fun, where the wide rice noodles are first charred in the wok for a bit of smoky wok hei, then smothered in a glossy, starch-thickened gravy with ribbons of beaten egg swirled through. That silky egg gravy is the whole point, and it coats every wide strand.
It came loaded too: slices of tender pork, a sweet prawn, slivers of fishcake and some leafy greens, all swimming in that savoury sauce. You eat it with a spoon to scoop up the gravy, and a dash of the cut chilli or pickled green chilli on the side gives it a sharp little kick that cuts the richness.
It is gentle, homely comfort food, the sort of plate that just makes you feel a bit better, and getting it for $3.50 is increasingly rare these days. Honest, satisfying hawker value.
Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Smoky flat noodles under a silky egg gravy with pork and prawn, comforting and great value. Would re-order.
