Sliced chicken porridge ($4.80) & Century egg with minced pork ($5.80)!
Two bowls of smooth Cantonese congee: sliced chicken, and century egg with minced pork, finished with spring onion and soy. $10.60.
A comforting congee dinner with BB: sliced chicken porridge ($4.80) and century egg with minced pork porridge ($5.80). π
What we had ($10.60 total):
- Sliced chicken porridge ($4.80)
- Century egg with minced pork porridge ($5.80), topped with spring onion and a drizzle of soy
Both bowls were the Cantonese style, where the rice is simmered until it completely breaks down into a smooth, almost silky porridge rather than the looser Teochew version with visible grains. That long cook gives it a velvety, soothing texture, the kind of bowl you want when you need something gentle and warming.
The sliced chicken one was the cleaner, plainer bowl, mild and savoury with tender poached chicken stirred through. The century egg with minced pork was the more characterful order, and my pick: little pieces of century egg melt into the porridge and add that deep, almost cheesy umami, while the minced pork gives it body. A scatter of spring onion and a swirl of soy on top, plus a shake of white pepper, lifts the whole thing.
Smooth, savoury and easy to finish, this is proper Cantonese comfort food, and very fairly priced for two generous bowls.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. πππΌ Silky Cantonese congee, the century egg and pork bowl especially comforting. Would re-order.
