Christmas Day porridge with BB: sliced fish porridge ($4) + egg ($0.50) + sliced chicken porridge ($3.50). 🎄😋 Not your typical Christmas feast, but exactly what we wanted.

What was on the table ($8):

While plenty of people do the turkey-and-trimmings thing on Christmas Day, sometimes a humble bowl of porridge just hits different, comforting, soothing and easy on the stomach. This is the smooth Cantonese style of congee, where the rice is simmered low and slow until the grains break down into a silky, creamy porridge.

The sliced fish porridge is the classic: thin slices of fresh fish that cook gently in the residual heat of the hot porridge so they stay tender, and cracking a raw egg into the bowl lets it cook in the heat too, enriching the whole thing into something silkier and more luxurious. The sliced chicken porridge is the homelier, budget pick, smooth congee with tender poached chicken, simple and satisfying.

A bit of white pepper, a few drops of soy and some fried shallots and you’re set. At $8 for two generous bowls, it was a gentle, comforting Christmas Day meal, proof that the best food doesn’t have to be fancy.

Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Silky congee with tender sliced fish and an enriching egg, soothing comfort food. A lovely low-key Christmas meal. Would re-do.
