PlayMade is one of our go-tos, known for making their pearls fresh, and this drink showed why. The milk tea base was the Taiwan style: a strong black tea brewed long enough to keep a proper bitter-sweet backbone, mixed with milk so it stays clean and tea-forward rather than just sweet.
The brown sugar pearls are the upgrade and the best part. Cooked in brown sugar syrup so the dark, caramelised sugar soaks right into them, they come out a deep brown with a lovely toffee-molasses sweetness and that bouncy, QQ chew. You could see them piled at the bottom of the cup, ready to chew through.
Stir it all together and the brown sugar swirls into the tea, sweetening it just enough, with the pearls giving you something to work through between sips. At $5.40 it is on the premium side, but for fresh-made pearls and a proper tea base it is worth it.
