What we had:
- Brown sugar boba milk from Tiger Sugar
Tiger Sugar is the Taichung brand that kicked off the whole tiger-stripe boba craze, so trying it at the source felt right. The cup is half the appeal: streaked with those dark tiger stripes of brown sugar syrup running down the inside, with a layer of pearls sitting at the bottom and fresh milk poured over (no tea in the classic version).
The pearls are the headline, and they earn it: properly chewy and bouncy, soaked in a deep, caramelised brown sugar that is richer and more molasses-like than most of the copycats. Each one carries that intense toffee sweetness. As you stir, the dark sugar swirls through the cold milk and sweetens the whole drink, clean and creamy underneath.
At around SGD$2.25 it was a fraction of the Singapore price, and somehow tasted better drinking it outside the original shop. Rich, milky and chewy, the original and still one of the best.
Overall: 4.7 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Creamy fresh milk, deep caramel brown sugar and warm chewy pearls, worth the queue. Would re-visit Taiwan for it.
