猪扒和控肉便當 (NT$100 each)!

A proper Taiwanese lunch on the trip with BB: 猪扒便當 (pork chop bento) and 控肉便當 (braised pork bento), NT$100 each (around SGD$4.50). 🍱😋

What we had (NT$200, around SGD$9 for two):

The Taiwanese bento is a thing of beauty: one wooden box, a base of rice, a generous main, and a little spread of vegetables tucked around it, all for a few dollars. The kong rou bento was my pick, that melt-in-the-mouth braised pork belly, slow-cooked in soy and five-spice until it is sticky, tender and deeply savoury, the kind of thing you want over plain rice.

The pork chop bento was the heartier one, a thin, well-seasoned cutlet with a savoury, peppery edge. Both came piled with greens, soft braised cabbage, a little sausage and some pickles, so you get variety in every box.

Comforting, complete and so cheap, this is exactly the everyday Taiwanese eating I love. Great value for a full, satisfying lunch.

Overall: 4.6 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Tender braised pork and a savoury pork chop over rice with lots of sides, classic Taiwanese bento value. Would re-order.
