A comforting weekend lunch with BB, made cheaper by Burpple Beyond: wanton mee ($4.80), a cucumber lemonade ($1.70) and a barley ($2), $8.50 in total. ๐
What we had:
- Wanton mee: dry egg noodles topped with char siew and leafy greens, with wantons and a bowl of soup on the side
- Cucumber lemonade and barley to drink
The wanton mee was the dry, tossed kind, which is my preference. Springy thin egg noodles coated in a savoury sauce, topped with slices of sweet, caramelised char siew and a bit of greens, with plump wantons and a clear soup served alongside to dip and slurp. The little dish of pork lard and chilli on the side is what lifts it: a spoon of each stirred through makes the noodles sing.
The drinks were the refreshing part. The cucumber lemonade was cool, pale-green and lightly sweet, clean and thirst-quenching, while the barley was the traditional, comforting one, that gently nutty, sweet barley water that goes with everything.
A simple, satisfying hawker-style spread, and at $8.50 for noodles plus two drinks on the deal, great value.
Overall: 4.6 / 5. ๐๐๐ผ Springy char siew wanton mee with refreshing cucumber lemonade and barley. Would re-do.
