What the set came with:
- XO seafood fried rice: wok-fried rice with prawns and XO sauce
- A bowl of spicy tom yum-style soup
- Satay-style skewers with peanut sauce, cucumber and onion
- A glutinous rice dessert with red bean and longan
The fried rice was the centrepiece and the reason to order it. XO sauce is that prized Cantonese condiment made from dried scallops and shrimp, deeply savoury and a little spicy, and stirred through wok-fried rice it gives every grain a smoky, umami punch with that coveted wok hei char. Sweet prawns ran through it, so each spoonful had a bit of seafood.
The bento format made it feel like a proper meal. The tom yum soup brought a hot, spicy-sour kick on the side, the little satay skewers added a smoky, peanutty bite, and the glutinous rice dessert with red bean and longan was a soft, gently sweet way to finish.
Lots going on for the price, and the XO fried rice alone was worth it.
