Earl Grey milk tea ($2.50) + Grass jelly ($0.80)!

Sunday afternoon drink stop — picked up an Earl Grey milk tea + grass jelly order. Total $3.30. Cheap, refreshing, and a flavour combination that quietly beats the more popular brown sugar pearl drinks when the weather is humid.

We ordered:

Earl Grey milk tea is the underrated workhorse of any bubble tea menu. The bergamot citrus aroma from the Earl Grey base cuts through the dairy in a way that regular black tea doesn’t — it gives the drink a clean, slightly perfumed finish that’s pleasant in our weather without being too heavy.

The base was a proper Earl Grey brew rather than just black tea with bergamot syrup. You can tell the difference because real Earl Grey has that floral-citrus oil aroma that lingers in the cup after you’ve finished. Sweetness was at 50% (always my default), letting the tea’s character come through against the milk.

The grass jelly topping was the texture-and-flavour upgrade over pearls. Grass jelly is the Asian herbal jelly made from mesona plant, with a slightly bitter herbal taste and a soft slippery texture. Cut into small cubes, dropped to the bottom of the cup, scooped up with the fat straw as you drink. Each spoonful brings the herbal jelly into the bergamot-milk tea — a more sophisticated combination than tapioca pearls and brown sugar.

At $3.30 for the upgraded order this is fair bubble tea pricing. The grass jelly add-on is the cheapest topping but arguably the most flavour-impactful.

We don’t drink bubble tea daily, but when we do, Earl Grey + grass jelly is the order we keep coming back to. Pearls are crowd-pleasing; grass jelly is the right pick.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Reliable Earl Grey + grass jelly combo — would re-order.
