Flat white ($5) & Chai latte (large: $8)!

Tuesday afternoon cafe stop with BB — went for the flat white ($5) + chai latte large ($8) combo at a neighbourhood specialty cafe. The mismatched-couple coffee pairing — espresso-based for me, spice-tea-based for BB.

We ordered:

Total: $13 for the pair.

The flat white was the textbook Australian-style pour. Double ristretto shot in a 6oz cup, microfoam silky enough to draw on without going dry, less milk than a latte but more than a cortado. The result is a more coffee-forward drink with the milk doing structural rather than masking work.

At $5 this is reasonable specialty cafe pricing — toward the lower end of the third-wave cafe range, which suggests either a smaller-format cafe or a slightly less premium bean. The pour was clean — no bitterness at the end, proper temperature, latte art tulip on top.

The chai latte at $8 large was the substantial drink. Proper chai brewed from scratch with spices (cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, black pepper) steeped in milk with black tea, sweetened with honey or syrup. The aroma off the cup hit before the drink did.

The chai-spice profile is the test of any chai latte. This one had the right balance — cardamom and cinnamon forward, with the ginger heat coming through on the back end and the clove note rounding it out. Not the powder-based imitation that some chains use, but actual spice infusion.

At $8 for a large, the chai latte is priced premium for the format — but the large size gave good value, and proper-spiced chai is worth more than coffee-of-the-day.

We sat at a small table, drank slow. The Tuesday afternoon cafe energy was quieter than weekend afternoons — fewer people, easier to find seats.

Overall: 4.4 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid specialty cafe pairing — would re-visit.
