Lor mee ($4)!

A comforting hawker lunch, a bowl of lor mee for $4. ๐Ÿ˜‹

What we had:

Lor mee (ๅค้ข) is the Hokkien noodle dish built on its signature thick, starchy gravy, and this bowl had it spot on. The gravy is the whole point: dark, glossy and viscous, simmered with five-spice and soy and thickened to that almost gel-like consistency that clings to every strand. Deep and savoury, the kind of sticky brown sauce you want to spoon up to the last drop.

The yellow noodles underneath had a good springy chew and soaked up the gravy nicely. On top, a crispy fried wonton for crunch against all that softness, a soft braised egg, and a generous heap of minced raw garlic and chives.

The garlic is what lifts it. Stir it through with a splash of the chilli and vinegar and suddenly the whole bowl wakes up, that sharp garlicky, tangy kick cutting through the rich, heavy gravy. Without it lor mee can feel one-note; with it, every mouthful has that bright contrast.

Honest, hearty and full of flavour for $4. Exactly what a good neighbourhood bowl should be.

Overall: 4.1 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Thick savoury gravy, springy noodles and a good hit of garlic, a satisfying lor mee. Would re-order.
