Piemonte hazelnuts are the gold standard of European hazelnut sourcing. The northern Italian Piedmont region produces the Tonda Gentile cultivar — hazelnuts with higher oil content, more aromatic profile, and a deeper roasted flavour than the standard Turkish or Spanish varieties. Most premium hazelnut gelato in the world uses Piemonte nuts as the base, and Singapore’s better gelato spots have started importing them too.
The Piemonte hazelnut scoop was the proper version. Pale tan-cream colour, with the unmistakable roasted hazelnut perfume coming off the scoop. The flavour was the kind of dense, slightly bitter, nutty depth that only properly toasted Piemonte hazelnuts deliver. Each spoonful had visible ground hazelnut bits distributed through the cream base.
Chocolate nibs gelato was the dark counterpart. Made with cacao nibs (the crushed roasted cocoa beans before they’re refined into chocolate), giving the gelato a darker chocolate flavour with slight bitter-earthy edges. The nibs themselves were embedded in the gelato as small crispy bits that added a crunch-and-cocoa hit with each spoonful.
The hazelnut-and-chocolate combination is the classic Italian gelato pairing — think Nutella but with proper sourcing instead of a jar. The roasted-nut warmth pairs with the dark cocoa depth in a way that each flavour amplifies the other.
The jumbo lavender waffle cone provided the structural base. Slight crisp texture, faint lavender perfume, the housemade quality that distinguishes a specialty gelato spot from a chain.
The combination eats like a proper Italian dessert. Slow scoops, no rush, savour each bite.
Overall: 4.5 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Excellent Piemonte + chocolate gelato — locked in as a regular order.
