Sicilian pistachio gelato ($6)!

A Monday-afternoon gelato stop with BB: a scoop of Sicilian pistachio, $6. ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ˜‹

What we had:

This is the real-deal pistachio, made with Bronte pistachios from the slopes of Mount Etna, and you can tell at a glance. It came that natural pale brown-green, flecked with ground pistachio, none of the lurid lime-green you get from artificial pistachio flavouring. The smell off the cup alone was warm and toasty.

The flavour was dense and grown-up. Bronte pistachios have a deeper, slightly bitter nuttiness than the milder varieties, and that gentle bitterness is the whole point: it is what makes it taste of real pistachio rather than vague sweet essence. The cream base just carried the nut rather than masking it. Texture was proper gelato too, dense and slow to melt, with that lovely silky mouthfeel.

We sat near the counter and ate it slowly, because a scoop like this is not one to rush. At $6 it is a slight premium over standard pistachio, but the difference in the ingredient is real and worth it.

Overall: 4.5 / 5. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Dense, nutty, properly bitter-edged Bronte pistachio gelato, the real thing. A go-to.
