Donki Pork Omu Soba Set ($7.90 each)!
Don Don Donki ready-to-eat pork omu soba: yakisoba wrapped in egg omelette with okonomi sauce, kewpie mayo, bonito flakes, and side takoyaki. $7.90 each.
Lunch hit. Donki pork omu soba set, $7.90 each (we got two). 😋👍🏼
What was in the boxes:
- 2 omu soba plates: yakisoba (Japanese fried noodles) wrapped inside a thin omelette envelope, drizzled with okonomi sauce + kewpie mayo in the signature grid pattern
- Bonito flakes (katsuobushi) + dried seaweed (aonori) sprinkled on top of each omelette
- 3-4 takoyaki balls per plate: golden brown octopus dough balls, glazed with okonomi sauce + kewpie mayo + bonito flakes
- The green plastic-grass separator (haran) between the takoyaki and the omu soba
- The ready-to-eat box format that Donki nails for grab-and-go meals
Omu soba (オムそば) is the Osaka street food classic:
- Yakisoba (fried noodles) with cabbage, bean sprouts, sometimes pork or seafood, stir-fried in the sweet-savoury okonomi sauce
- Wrapped inside a thin omelette: the egg sealed around the noodle filling like a folded burrito
- Topped with okonomi sauce + kewpie + bonito flakes + aonori: the same flavour profile as takoyaki and okonomiyaki, the Osaka holy trinity
- The combo with takoyaki on one plate: a “best of Osaka street food” sampler
The okonomi sauce + kewpie + bonito grid topping is the Osaka street food universal:
- Okonomi sauce: thick sweet brown sauce, similar to HP / brown sauce but sweeter and umami-richer (date, prune, soy, vinegar, salt, garlic)
- Kewpie mayo: Japanese mayonnaise, made with egg yolks only (not whole egg) for richness
- Drizzled in a crisscross or grid pattern by experienced cooks
- Bonito flakes (katsuobushi): thin dried tuna shavings that “dance” from the heat
- Aonori (dried green seaweed flakes): the salty-marine finish
Don Don Donki’s ready-to-eat counter is the heart of their food strategy in Singapore:
- Made in-store throughout the day: not factory-shipped
- Mix of sushi, bento, and street-food: omu soba, takoyaki, yakitori skewers, salads, sashimi sets
- Prices in the $5-$15 range per pack: makes weekday lunches efficient
- Stock rotation: items get marked down progressively through the day, with the late-afternoon “sticker discounts” being the Donki insider tip
At $7.90 each for the omu soba + takoyaki combo, this lands in the value tier. The same dish at a sit-down Osaka-style restaurant would run $14-$18. The Donki version is a 70% scale model of the restaurant equivalent.
Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 Solid Donki omu soba lunch. The okonomi sauce + kewpie grid was the chef’s kiss. Would re-buy.
