Birds of Paradise — lychee raspberry + thyme cone ($6.80)!

Birds of Paradise return: lychee raspberry on a thyme cone, $6.80, Bugis. 😋

What was in hand:

Birds of Paradise runs its menu on botanical flavours, flowers, herbs and fruit, and the lychee raspberry is the fruity end of the range: the soft floral sweetness of lychee paired with the sharp tartness of raspberry, a combination that balances itself. Lychee on its own can read cloying; the raspberry’s acidity cuts it, while the lychee rounds the berry’s edge. It is the brighter, more refreshing scoop, the one to reach for in the heat.

The fruit pairing is the craft: real fruit gelato lives or dies on whether the flavours taste fresh or jammy, and the berry flecks through this scoop signalled actual fruit rather than syrup. The sweet-tart balance was the draw, neither note dominating.

The thyme cone, the brand’s signature, adds the herbal frame: baked with thyme for a faintly savoury edge that plays against the sweet fruit gelato. With a fruity flavour like this, the cone’s herbal note is the unexpected contrast that keeps the dessert interesting rather than just sweet.

At $6.80 for a botanical fruit scoop on the signature cone, this is fair artisanal-gelato pricing.

Overall: 4.3 / 5. 😋👍🏼 The sweet-tart lychee-raspberry balance against the herbal cone was the standout. BOP standard, would re-order.
